MILFORD, CT : A woman was seriously injured on May, Thursday, 25th 2017
A woman was seriously injured Thursday at a factory that makes Schick razor blades when her right hand got caught in a piece of machinery, fire officials said.
The incident occurred at about 9:15 a.m., according to a statement from Edgwell, the parent company of Schick. The factory is at 10 Leighton Road.
Firefighters worked for 17 minutes to free the woman’s hand from the machine, as medics applied a tourniquet to slow bleeding, according to Milford Fire Battalion Chief Anthony Fabrizi.
The worker, in her 50 according to dispatch reports, was later treated at the Yale New Haven Hospital trauma center. No information on her condition was available later Thursday.
“Schick officials are working with (an Occupational Safety and Health Administration representative) to investigate the incident,” Fabrizi said.
Edgewell said in a company statement that the OSHA investigation is routine after an incident such as the one that occurred Thursday morning. Beyond that investigation, Edgwell said the company would actively look to “ensure the safety of all other employees moving forward.”
The statement from Edgewell indicated that the woman has worked with the company for almost 30 years, and was operating a packaging machine when the incident occurred. Edgewell said this is the first recorded injury on an employee using this specific machine.
On-site counselling and 24-hour virtual conselling services have been made available through the next week for employees affected by the incident, according to the statement from Edgewell.
Workers at the plant manufacture razor blades, including stamping, tempering and sharpening them, according to recent job postings on the company’s website. Edgewell razors are used in variety of brands, including Schick.
