Las Vegas, NV : One woman dead in a fatal two-vehicle crash on Rainbow at Hacienda on Monday afternoon, May 11, 2015

A woman died in a crash near Rainbow Boulevard and Hacienda Avenue on Monday afternoon, Las Vegas police said.

Officers responded to the two-vehicle crash in the intersection at 2:30 p.m., Officer Laura Meltzer said. The 73-year-old woman, a passenger in a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis, was trapped in a vehicle for a short time and died at University Medical Center.

The Mercury was traveling south on Rainbow in the left turn lane. The 68-year-old man driving the Mercury ran the light at Hacienda and was hit by a northbound 2014 Audi S5, which had a green light, Metro’s Accident Investigations Section said Monday night. The Audi hit the Mercury at the right passenger doors.

The drivers of both cars were taken to the hospital with injuries that police described as minor. Officers on the scene did not suspect either driver of being impaired.

Traffic in both directions on Rainbow and on westbound Hacienda were being turned around most of the afternoon, Metro wrote in a release about 4:20 p.m. Drivers on eastbound Hacienda were diverted south. Rainbow was open again by 8 p.m., according to the Regional Transportation Commission.

The identity of the woman who died will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office after her family has been notified. This is the 40th traffic-related fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction in 2015. The collision remains under investigation by the Accident Investigations Section.
