Overnight crash damages tree, utility pole

Authorities say a 13-year-old Gary boy has died after a car struck him and another boy before fleeing the scene.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office says Malik Herron was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma at a hospital.

Gary police say the two boys were walking about 8 p.m. Saturday when a vehicle left the roadway and struck them. The Post-Tribune reports the other boy was able to go home and tell his parents, who alerted police. The other boy was treated for injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.

Police were searching for a vehicle with damage to its front passenger side.
