Orlando, FL : A 66-year-old bicyclist was killed after being struck by a van around 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, 2014
A bicyclist was killed Wednesday afternoon as he was riding along Apopka Vineland Road in Orange County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The bicyclist, who had an aftermarket gas-powered engine attached, was traveling northbound on Apopka Vineland Road, in the left turning lane around 1:50 p.m.
Witnesses said the bicycle attempted to make a left turn to travel west onto Balboa Drive. But he suddenly made a U-turn to travel southbound on Apopka Vineland Road.
The bicyclist then turned into the direct path of a 1991 GMC van being driven by Michelle Pringle, 41, of Ocoee.
Pringle attempted to swerve to the right to avoid the bicyclist, but she struck the bicycle with the front of the van.
The bicyclist, who is listed as 66-years-old, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Pringle wasn't injured.
The southbound lanes of Apopka Vineland Road and the eastbound lanes of Balboa Drive remain closed as of 3:50 p.m.
The scene is expected to be cleared within an hour, but the Florida Highway Patrol is urging motorists to avoid the area through rush hour.
