Ashton, S.D : Four people injured in a two-vehicle crash in Spink County on Monday, January 2, 2017
Four people were taken by ambulance from the scene of a two-vehicle crash one mile north of Ashton on U.S. Highway 281 Monday.
The driver of a northbound 1998 Mazda car lost control of his vehicle and over-corrected at about 3:30 p.m. near mile marker 164, crossed the center line and crashed into a southbound 2015 Ford pickup, said Tony Mangan, South Dakota Department of Public Safety spokesman. Both vehicles ended up in the west ditch.
Names of the drivers were not being released Monday night, Mangan said.
The driver of the Mazda, a 36-year-old man, was removed from the scene via ambulance and taken to Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen for life-threatening injuries, Mangan said. He was scheduled to be flown to Sioux Falls.
He and his passenger, a 31-year-old man, had to be extracted from the car, Mangan said. The passenger was taken to St. Luke's for serious, non-lifethreatening injuries.
The driver of the pickup, a 63-year-old male, and his passenger, a 60-year-old female, were taken by ambulance to Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield with serious, non-lifethreatening injuries, Mangan said.
All parties were wearing seat belts.
The South Dakota State Highway Patrol is investigating, Mangan said. Also on scene were the Spink County Sheriff's Office, the Redfield Jaws Team, the Redfield Ambulance, Ashton Fire and Rescue, Aberdeen Ambulance and South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks.
