CHICAGO, IL : Medical emergency causes fatal 9-car crash on Saturday, January, 27th 2018
Today, William Lockhart is going through old photos of his brother, Darius Sconiers.
The little boy in the photos grew up to become a talented chef, with an impressive resume working across popular restaurants across Chicago. His uncle Kevin McGee says he was a hard worker.
"Everything that he had planned, it was coming into fruition," Kevin said.
His aunt Caryn McGee believes Darius was on his way to cook for a celebrity client when he was driving in the eastbound lanes of Congress Parkway near Wells Street Saturday afternoon.
State police said the 56-year-old driver of a white Mercedes Sedan had a "medical emergency" and crashed into Sconiers' car at a high rate of speed.
It set off a chain reaction that left six people seriously injured, and 35-year-old Sconiers dead.
"You hear things on the news, you never think you're affected," Caryn McGee said. "And to know it was him, I was like, 'Oh my. Oh my.'"
Now, they're remembering Sconiers as a funny, talented and spiritual man, and coming to terms with everything they've lost.
As for the driver of the Mercedes, they harbor no resentment, because they know their's is not the only family dealing with pain.
"Definitely praying for the family and all those involved," Caryn said. "All those involved, praying for them. Grateful that no one else had to go through this."
