CONWAY, SC : Charges increased in hit and run after victim dies on Thursday, January 26th 2017
Horry County officials have increased the charges against a Murrell Inlet woman after the victim of a hit and run victim died.
Local media outlets reported that Michael Dunn, 44 died from his injuries 11 days after trying to break up a fight at a Garden City bar where he was hit by a car leaving the scene Jan. 6.
Horry County police responded to the problems at the bar and found Dunn lying unconscious in the bar’s parking lot as other people tried to help the man.
Janelle Lee Castillo, 35, was originally charged with hit and run and leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, as well as assault and battery.
Horry County Police Lt. Raul Dennis said Thursday the charges were increased hit and run leaving the scene of an accident with a death and reckless homicide.
Castillo surrendered to detectives Thursday and was being held in the county jail. It was not known if she has an attorney.
An arrest warrant states Castillo was providing transportation for her boyfriend, who was involved in the fight in front of her vehicle with several other people. The warrant also says Castillo was intoxicated.
“The defendant’s actions showed reckless disregard of the safety of others which resulted in death,” according to the arrest warrant.
The two men involved in the fight were charged with assault and battery.
Dunn was the step-son of Goose Creek Mayor Michael Heitzler, who would not talk about the death last week.
