Charlotte County, FL : Lehigh Acres man died following a head-on collision on Bermont Road (SR-74) on Monday, December 12, 2016

A Lehigh Acres man has died following a head-on collision on Bermont Road (SR-74) in Charlotte County.

Florida Highway Patrol says while attempting to pass another vehicle, a Ford Excursion driving west on Bermont Road drove into the eastbound lanes.

In order to avoid a head-on collision, 61-year-old Gerald Shipman tried to drive into the grassy shoulder but still crashed into the front left of the Excursion, according to troopers.

Shipman died from injuries he suffered from the crash.

Two children from Punta Gorda, a 1 and 3-year-old, were passengers in the Excursion. They were transported to Lee Memorial for minor injuries, while the driver was sent there for serious injuries.

Troopers say everyone involved was wearing seatbelts or child restraints.

It is still unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Charges are pending the result of the investigation.

The roads were closed for several hours after the crash but have since reopened.
