Columbus, OH : Man killed, 5-year-old injured in head-on crash in Fairfield County on Wednesday November 9, 2016
A driver died and a 5-year-old in in the car's backseat was injured in a head-on crash with a semi this morning in Fairfield County, the State Highway Patrol said.
James W. Braden, 26, of Stoutsville, was driving northeast in a Toyota Tercel on Route 159 in Clearcreek Township, also known as Chillicothe-Lancaster Road, when the car went left of center and into the path of an oncoming, oil-hauling Freightliner at about 8:51 a.m. Braden died and the child, who was properly secured in a car seat, was flown to Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus with non-life-threatening injuries, the patrol said.
The Ohio Enviromental Protection Agency sent workers to clean up spilled oil at the crash area, in the 6700 block of the road, south of Hamburg Road. The collision sent the semi off the left side of the road, into a guard rail and down an embankment, where it overturned.
The semi driver, Friedrich W. Winters, 47, of Zanesville, was taken to Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster with minor injuries, the patrol said.
The patrol refused to release the name of the injured child. The crash remains under investigation.
