Grand Ronde ,OR :10-year-old seriously injured after crash along Hwy 18 on Monday afternoon ,September 7th 2015

A 10-year-old boy was thrown from an SUV and seriously injured in a head-on crash on Highway 18.

Emergency crews responded to Milepost 12, about nine miles west of Grand Ronde, at 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Investigators said a 1990 Geo Prizm was heading eastbound on the highway when it crossed over into the westbound lanes. The car collided with a westbound 2000 Ford Expedition.

The SUV then lost control, left the roadway and rolled over, according to police.

The driver of the Expedition, Laurie Altig, 57, of Portland, was taken by ambulance to a Portland hospital for treatment of injuries described as non-life threatening. She was in good condition at the hospital Tuesday, according to a spokesperson.

Police said a 10-year-old child in the car was flown to a Portland hospital with potential life-threatening injuries. He was listed in fair condition Tuesday.

The driver of the Geo was identified as 21-year-old Elliot Thompson of Aumsville. He was taken by ambulance to a Salem area hospital and was expected to be OK.

Contributing factors that led to the crash are still under investigation, according to Oregon State Police. The highway fully reopened by 6 p.m.
