Seattle, WA : A man dies after being hit by a car on Boren Avenue and Virginia Street in Seattle on Wednesday morning, October 22, 2014
A man stopped breathing after he was hit by a car in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood.
The man was hit in the intersection of Boren Avenue and Virginia Street Wednesday morning. Police said he was jaywalking when the driver smashed into him.
"I looked up, I saw the gentleman right at impact, (he) hit the window, slid down. (The driver) stopped and kind of panicked,” said witness Joe Lundquist.
Lundquist and several other people ran to help. The victim wasn't breathing and was bleeding profusely.
The driver said she didn't see him because it was so dark and rainy.
The impact left a dent in her car’s hood and smashed its windshield.
The pedestrian was wearing an orange construction vest. Lundquist, who is a construction worker, said he thinks he was racing to get to a nearby construction site before 7 a.m.
He said he’s seen two other workers hit by cars in the same area recently, because the pedestrians weren't paying attention.
“Take your time, wait for the lights, wait for the crosswalk signs, don’t be in a hurry -- safety first,” said Lundquist.
The pedestrian was taken to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.
The driver was questioned and police performed a field sobriety test, but she was not arrested for DUI.
She told witnesses she was a nurse and was on her way to work.
Seattle police said the case is under investigation, but if she's found to be at fault, she could be cited or face charges.
