ATTLEBORO, MA : Attleboro officer hurt in highway crash on Friday, July 28, 2017
A city police officer was injured when his cruiser was hit from behind on Interstate 95 late Friday night after answering a call about a naked woman on the highway.
Police about 11:30 p.m. received a report about a naked female on I-95 North by Exit 2. The woman was located and arrested by state police, local police said.
The Attleboro cruiser was struck at about the same time in a northbound lane of the interstate while it was pulling over, police said.
“A vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed crashed into the rear of an Attleboro cruiser, injuring the officer,” Attleboro police said in a statement late Saturday.
The officer was taken to Rhode Island Hospital, Providence.
“He sustained some head trauma. He had two larcerations to his head,” Attleboro Police Sgt. Kevin Fuoco said, adding the officer, whose name wasn’t being released, was treated and released early Saturday morning.
The police car sustained extensive damage, police said.
The driver of the vehicle that smashed into the cruiser was charged by state police.
As to why the nude woman was on the highway, “That is unclear at this time,” Fuoco said. She was taken to an area hospital by state police and her condition is unknown.
Fuoco added local police were only up on the highway to assist state police.
No other information was available late Saturday night. State police referred questions to Attleboro police spokesmen.
