Buena, WA : Man killed in wrong-way crash on I-82 west of Buena on Tuesday night, January 24, 2017

One man is dead and another is in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after a wrong-way crash Tuesday night on Interstate 82.

The crash happened around 11:30 p.m. about 2 miles west of Buena when a 2013 Hyundai Accent driven by Justin E. Newhouse, 27, of Mabton, collided with a 2004 Chrysler Sebring driven by Gabino Heredia, 22, of Yakima, according to a Washington State Patrol news release.

Troopers said the Hyundai was headed west in the eastbound lanes of I-82 when it crashed into the Chrysler.

Both drivers were first taken to Virginia Mason Memorial hospital in Yakima before being flown to Harborview, where Heredia later died.

Both vehicles were destroyed in the crash, according to the state patrol.

Troopers said intoxicants were a factor in the crash and charges would be sought against Newhouse.

Traffic was detoured around the crash scene until just before 4 a.m. Wednesday, according to the state Department of Transportation.
