Grand Junction, CO : Two people were in seriously injured in a crash at Interstate 70 On Thursday, July 14th, 2016
Both westbound lanes of the interstate were closed into Thursday evening.
The Honda was traveling west in the right lane of I-70 at about 1 p.m. when it ran into the back of a CC Enterprises truck parked on the hard shoulder. Two CC Enterprises employees who were in the truck’s cab at the time said
they were setting signs for work that will begin Monday extending interstate access ramps.
Responders from the Grand Junction Fire Department had to use extraction equipment to remove the male driver from the Honda, said Sean Hazelhurst with the Grand Junction Fire Department.
The car was significantly crushed on its driver side. The driver was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital, as was the female passenger.
None of the truck’s three passengers were injured in the accident. The CC Enterprises employees said that their supervisor, who was driving, saw the car approaching the truck at a high rate of speed and quickly put the truck
in gear to try getting out of the way.
The Honda crashed into the back of the truck anyway, pushing it down an embankment on the north side of the interstate, the employees said.
The female employee praised her supervisor for keeping the truck from rolling, since it was pushed down the embankment at an angle.
Both westbound lanes of I-70 between Clifton and Horizon Drive were closed for more than five hours Thursday, said Heidi Davidson, Grand Junction Police Department spokesperson. The left lane opened briefly to let traffic
through that had passed the Clifton exit before that portion of interstate was closed. The ongoing investigation will determine whether the car rolled, Davidson said.
It came to rest facing northeast in the right lane, with about 25 feet of skid marks curving out from its front tires.
