Auburn, NY : Car crashes, catches fire in Aurelius Thursday afternoon, August 18, 2016
A car crashed into a guardrail, rolled over and caught fire in Aurelius Thursday afternoon, but the driver apparently suffered only minor injuries.
The accident happened at about 2:20 p.m. at the intersection of Route 20 and Cayuga Road. Firefighters put the fire out quickly and the male driver was reported to be slightly injured.
The driver was checked over at the scene of the crash and then transported by ambulance to Auburn Community Hospital.
The car was headed southbound and the driver failed to negotiate a turn in the roadway, sending the car through a guardrail and into a yard, where it came to rest about 20 feet from a home.
Police were investigating whether the crash might be related to a reported hit-and-run crash minutes earlier at the Nice N Easy store on Route 20 in Montezuma, about 1 mile north of the crash in Aurelius.
Officials said that the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office was investigating the Aurelius crash and state police were investigating the alleged hit and run, but no additional details were available Thursday night.
