A late-afternoon crash Friday on Route 234 in Paradise Township killed two people and injured two others, according to Northern York County Regional Police.

Kevin Shaffer, 32, of Lincoln Way West, New Oxford, and Carlton Jacobs, 98, of East Berlin Road in Paradise Township, died in the crash, according to the York County Coroner's Office.

About 5 p.m. Friday, Shaffer was driving his SUV north on North Lake Road and failed to stop at the stop sign at East Berlin Road, police said. The SUV traveled into the path of and struck a sedan, and the SUV rolled several times before coming to rest against the front porch of a house, according to police. The vehicle burst into flames.

Jacobs, who was in the front passenger seat of the sedan, died at the scene.

Shaffer was taken by helicopter to York Hospital and was pronounced dead shortly before 8 p.m. Friday. He was the only one in his car, and it is not known if he had been wearing a seat belt, the coroner's office said.

A 71-year-old woman was ejected from the sedan and was taken to the hospital by helicopter. The driver, a 70-year-old man, was taken by ambulance to York Hospital. The two are from Paradise Township.

Police say alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.

Shaffer's cause of death was multiple blunt-force trauma, with the manner being accidental. Jacobs' cause of death was multiple blunt-force trauma from being an unrestrained passenger in the car, with the manner accidental as well, according to the coroner's office.

Crash: The initial report was of a vehicle that had crashed into a structure, and both the structure and vehicle were on fire, according to 911 radio transmissions. Fire departments from Spring Grove, Dover Township and East Berlin assisted at the scene. The section of the road was closed off until about 10 p.m.

Witnesses said they saw a yellow vehicle — later identified as Shaffer's SUV — burst into flames after it was hit and caused the porch of the home to catch on fire as well.

"The whole van was up in flames," said Megan Myers, of New Salem. Myers was driving on North Lake Road behind the vehicle before it collided with the sedan on East Berlin Road.
