A Warsaw police officer was taken to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne on Monday night after being involved in a crash, Indiana State Police said today.

Witnesses told state police at Bremen that just before 9 p.m., Patricia Hammons, 57, of North Manchester, was driving east on East Center Street and ran a red light, striking Sgt. Clay Layne's patrol car in the side.

The impact from the crash caused the driver's-side airbags in the police cruiser to deploy, police said. Layne, 46, was turning west onto East Center Street from East Lake Drive.

Layne, who was on patrol duty at the time of the crash, was treated for neck pain at the hospital and was released.

Hammons, who was not injured, was cited for disregarding an automatic signal, police said.
