There are 330 sworn officer on the Chandler Police force; all are mourning the loss of the second officer on a motorcycle in a week.
Officer David Payne was hit by a man who police believe was under the influence, had an aggravated DUI on his record, and was driving on a suspended license.
At 12:40 a.m. Officer David Payne was stopped at a red light near Chandler Blvd & Pennington.
A Pontiac driven by 31-year-old Brian Yazzi plowed into him from behind.
Yazzie took off but was arrested quickly by responding officers.
Officer Payne died shortly after that at the hospital.
Yazzie had his 11 month-old child in the car, that child was not hurt.
Payne was 37-years-old, had been with the department for seven years, and was on the DUI Enforcement Squad.
His death came just a few days after Officer Bryant Holmes was killed in a traffic accident on a motorcycle while commuting to work.
"Both officers Payne and Holmes they touched many people's lives and when they came to work they made a difference, and that is something not many professions can say," said Chief Sean Duggan.
People have been coming to the Chandler Police headquarters and leaving floral arrangements. They ask why these tragedies keep coming over and over.
"It is hard on me, but I cannot imagine what those guys are going through, it is so senseless," said David Porter.
Brian Yazzie is now in the four avenue jail. He will appear before a judge for charges of manslaughter and hit and run.
This is the second Chandler officer to be killed in a traffic accident this week.
In addition, Chandler Police Officer Robert Nielsen was also killed in a crash at the same intersection in June 2002.
He was on his way to a call when a driver hit his patrol car. It smashed into a pole and caught fire.
