The driver of a sport utility vehicle that hit a school bus near Archer High School late Wednesday afternoon was taken to the hospital for treatment, according to police and fire officials.
Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Tommy Rutledge said firefighters responded to a call at 5:01 p.m. about a person trapped in a vehicle on Callie Still Road near Tribble Mill Road. The driver of the SUV that hit the bus was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated, he said.
Gwinnett police spokeswoman Cpl. Michele Pihera said the bus and SUV collided nearly head on and the driver of the SUV suffered a serious injury. No children were on the bus when the accident occurred, she said. The driver was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center.
Rutledge said the bus driver was evaluated at the scene for a minor medical complaint but was released.
Gwinnett County school officials were not immediately available for comment Wednesday night. Pihera said more information about the accident, including why the vehicles hit each other, may be available Thursday.
