RALEIGH, NC : NC Highway Patrol asks public’s help in IDing man killed in fiery I-95 wreck on Thursday, 20th October 2016

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is asking for the public’s help in identifying the man killed in a wreck on Interstate 95 after his vehicle was burned beyond recognition in the ensuing toxic fire.

The dead man is believed to have been driving a recreational vehicle south on Interstate 95 near mile-marker 95 in Johnston County when he rear-ended a tractor trailer stopped due to traffic congestion, according to the highway patrol.The tractor trailer was hauling a “solid corrosive” material, which began burning. Officials moved to evacuate people from the nearby area and allowed the fire to burn itself out. By the time they were able to safely approach the scene, the vehicle “was burned beyond recognition and investigators are unable to identify the make, model or registration plate,” said Lt. Jeff Gordon of the highway patrol.The driver, a white man approximately 60 to 65 years of age, was ejected in the wreck, but didn’t have any identifying information on his person. Authorities are unsure whether there was anyone else in the vehicle at the time; the fire could easily have consumed another body, Gordon said. Once officials identify the tag on the vehicle, one of the questions investigators hope to ask family members is who else might have been in the vehicle, he said.

Now, investigators are asking the public to provide “ANY pictures or videos that might have been taken immediately after collision so that investigators can identify the registration plate and its state or origin.”
