Kalkaska, MI : Motorcyclist in stable condition after crash in Clare County on Friday, April 7, 2017
A 43-year-old Wexford County man was hospitalized and in stable condition Friday after being thrown from his motorcycle in an accident near Clare.
Shannon Schaefer of Cadillac was not wearing a helmet when the driver of a pickup truck turned left into his path.
State law in Michigan allows for motorcycle riders to not wear helmets.
Schaefer was riding on Ludington Drive near Harrison Avenue in Grant Township when Clare County Central Dispatch received a call about the accident at 7:20 p.m., police said.
Charles Corey, 24, of Harrison was driving a 1997 Ford pickup on west on Ludington Drive and attempted to turn left into a driveway when he turned into Schaefer’s eastbound path, Clare County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Bailey said.
Schaefer was thrown from his 2014 Harley Davidson motorcycle, sustaining a head injury.
Schaefer was taken to MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland and is listed as being in stable condition, Bailey said.
Corey was taken to MidMichigan Medical Center-Clare for evaluation.
Investigation determined that neither drugs nor alcohol were involved in the accident, Bailey said.
Mobile Medical Response ambulance service, the Clare Police Department,the Clare Fire Department, Hamilton and Joes Auto Wrecker services and an off-duty Mt. Pleasant police officer assisted at the scene.
