Holiday, FL : 98-year-old man killed in crash with Pasco deputy on U.S. 19 early Sunday morning, Nov 8, 2015
A 98-year-old man was killed early Sunday morning when he ran a red light and drove into the path of a Pasco County Sheriff's Office patrol car, Florida Highway Patrol troopers reported.
William Vatalaro, Sr., of Holiday, was driving a 2010 Ford Escape west on Darlington Road about 12:30 a.m. Sunday and failed to stop where the road intersects with U.S. 19, troopers reported.
Hans Bollenbacher, a Pasco County sheriff's deputy, was driving north on U.S. 19 and hit the left side of Vatalaro's vehicle when it entered the intersection. Bollenbacher, 30, and his 19-year-old passenger Tyler Hammelman, both of New Port Richey, sustained minor injuries, according to an FHP report.
Hammelman is a member of the sheriff's office Explorer program.
Vatalaro was transported to Bayonet Point Hospital, where he later died.
According to court records, he was cited for failing to stop at a red light in May of last year.
