Seattle, WA : 1 killed, car ripped apart in crash with power pole on MLK Jr. Way on Monday, October 24, 2016

One person was killed overnight when a car slammed into a power pole along Seattle's Martin Luther King Jr. Way with such force that it ripped the car completely in half, police said.

Officers and medics responded to the scene, on MLK Jr. Way between South Boeing Access Road and South Henderson Street, at about 11:50 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of a serious accident, said Detective Mark Jamieson of the Seattle police.

A mangled Acura Integra was found at the scene, split in two. The driver's body was found outside the car along the roadway. He was later identified as a man in his 20s.

A preliminary investigation found that the driver was heading north on MLK Jr. Way at high speed when he veered off the roadway and slammed into the utility pole, Jamieson said.

The northbound lanes of MLK Jr. Way were closed after the crash and are expected to remain closed through Tuesday afternoon as crews replace the heavily damaged power pole that was struck.
