Billings, MT : A head-on collision between two cars killed three people evening in Fergus County on Tuesday, 5th June 2018
A head-on collision between two cars killed three people Tuesday evening in Fergus County, according to the Montana Highway Patrol.
Two of the victims, Chelsea R. Simpson, 29, and Gage F. Hall, 24, both of Roundup, were identified Wednesday afternoon by Fergus County Coroner R.J. Brown. Investigators had not yet identified the third victim by 4 p.m., Brown said.
The crash was reported Tuesday at about 5:50 p.m. and occurred on U.S. Highway 87 at mile marker 37, roughly 8 miles south of Grass Range.
It's believed that Simpson was driving an SUV southbound and tried to pass another SUV before she collided almost directly head-on with a northbound Mercedes sedan, said MHP Trooper Joe DeJong.
The SUV Simpson was driving ended up in the southbound lane facing north after the crash. The sedan came to a stop across from the SUV, just off the shoulder of the roadway in the east ditch, DeJong said.
Responders arrived to find Simpson and Hall deceased and the third victim injured and in need of extrication. St. Vincent Healthcare Mercy Flight responded to the scene, but the unidentified male died shortly after he was removed from his vehicle and before he could be loaded onto the helicopter, DeJong said.
