Spartanburg, South Carolina
Two separate fatal vehicle crashes occurred in Spartanburg County on Wednesday.
South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Joe Hovis said it was unknown whether wet road conditions were a factor in the crashes. Rainfall was steady in some areas throughout the day.
The first fatal crash occurred at 11:59 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 85 southbound near Exit 60 at Highway 101. According to Hovis, a driver traveling south ran his vehicle off the right side of I-85, striking a sign and then a tree. The driver was not wearing a seat belt, Hovis said.
The driver was trapped in the vehicle and had to be removed, Hovis said.
Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger identified the driver as Talon Kade Gambrell, 20, of Piedmont. Gambrell, a nurse at Saint Francis Hospital, died at the crash scene.
At 1 p.m. Wednesday, Highway Patrol responded to another fatal crash on Hannon Road behind Holly Springs Baptist Church in Inman. According to Hovis, a vehicle crashed when the driver lost control and went off the left side of the roadway, striking a tree.
The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was trapped and had to be removed from the vehicle. Clevenger identified the driver, who died at the scene, as Harley Danyale Richardson, 20, of Holden Road, Inman.
Richardson was a volunteer member of the Holly Springs Fire Department.
