Richmond, VA :Tractor trailer wedges under I-95 overpass in Richmond Hill on Thursday, July 2nd 2015
One lane of Interstate 95 south and the exit 87 south off-ramp in Richmond Hill will be closed indefinitely after the driver of a tractor trailer underestimated the height of his load while traveling north on U.S. 17, struck the I- 95 overpass and became wedged underneath this morning.Additionally one northbound lane of U.S. 17 will be closed until at least late this afternoon.“Two lanes of I-95 south will remain open,” Richmond Hill Police Maj. Mike Albritton said. “We are waiting on a structural engineer from Atlanta to determine what has to be done.”GDOT officials inspected the overpass Albritton said and do not fear that the overpass might collapse but they are concerned that the exit ramp and far west southbound lane of the Interstate, which took the brunt of the impact, could be further damaged by allowing traffic to continue across them.“We won’t know for sure until the engineer gets here,” Albritton said. The accident occurred about 10 a.m., the tractor trailer was freed around 10:40 a.m. after the driver of the truck was able to lower the boom of the excavator enough to clear the underside of the overpass. However with one lane of U.S. 17 closed traffic remains backed up northbound south of the Richmond Hill. All lanes of U.S. 17 south are open.Drivers traveling south on I-95 wishing to exit at U.S. 17 will be detoured off at exit 90 onto Ga. 144 east to U.S. 17 south.Albritton said signs would be placed at exit 90 and the Ga. 204 exit warning motorists of the situation ahead.
