Tucson, AZ : 23-year-old man died after 2-vehicle crash on Aviation Parkway on Wednesday, April 20, 2016

A 23-year-old man died Wednesday at Banner-University Medical Center Tucson of critical injuries he suffered in a two-vehicle crash Tuesday.

The man was identified as Hugues Ishimwe, said Sgt. Kimberly Bay, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.

The driver of the other vehicle remains hospitalized with serious injuries.

On Tuesday at about 7:30 a.m., Ishimwe was driving a 2008 Kia Spectra east on Aviation Parkway and when he was approaching the Kino overpass his vehicle became disabled and stopped in the median lane, Bay said.

Ishimwe turned on the vehicle's hazard lights.

A woman driving a 1997 Nissan pickup east on Aviation struck the Kia from behind, said Bay.

Traffic investigators said speed and impairments appear to be factors in the crash, Bay said. Investigators did not elaborate.

Since January, there have been 12 fatalities in the city, compared to 16 at this time last year, according to police data.
