New Haven, CT : One person was dead in a a tractor-trailer crash at Interstate 95 on Wednesday, 24th August, 2016
Part of Interstate 95 south was shut down for more than an hour late Wednesday morning after a crash involving a tractor-trailer on the city line between New Haven and West Haven. Minor injuries were reported.
The crash happened just before 11 a.m., about one-third of a mile south of Exit 44, according to the state Department of Transportation.
Rescue crews from New Haven and West Haven responded to the crash. New Haven firefighters extricated a truck driver from the wreckage, an operation that took about a half-hour, according to emergency radio reports.
The driver, Michael Chebro, 61, of Derby, was conscious as crews worked on the extrication, state police said. He was taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for evaluation and possible treatment of his injuries, according to the
police report.
Images available on DOT traffic cameras show the crash appeared to happen near the Exit 44 southbound on-ramp. As Chebro was slowing down for traffic in the center lane of the highway, his load shifted and broke free,
eventually striking the cab portion of the truck, police said. He was issued an infraction for operating an improperly loaded vehicle and travelling too fast for conditions.
The southbound side of the highway was completely shut down for two hours between Exits 44 and 43 after the accident. At about 1 p.m., the DOT said the highway was partially reopened with only the right and center lanes
blocked. The agency said delays on the southbound side stretched back more than 3 miles to Exit 51 in East Haven before the accident cleared at about 1:20 p.m.
State police said one of the traffic lanes on the southbound side was physically damaged by equipment that fell off a truck during the crash. A photo from the scene appeared to show a significant indentation in the pavement
near the crash scene.
