Two sisters from Mooresville were killed in a head-on crash early Friday in Arizona.
Karli Arlene Richardson, 20, and her sister, Kelsey Mae Richardson, 18, died when the car they were in was struck by a car going the wrong way on Interstate 17 outside Phoenix, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The driver of the other car, Keaton Allison, 21, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, was also killed. All three people were pronounced dead on the scene.
“There were no signs of either vehicle attempting to brake or avoid the collision,” according to an Arizona Department of Public Safety press release.
The sisters' mother, Cathy Hocking, told Phoenix TV station ABC-15 that the women were traveling to the Grand Canyon when the crash occurred around 2 a.m.
"They wanted to do things first, together, as sisters," Hocking told the station. "They wanted to drive to the Grand Canyon and be there when the sun came up."
Karli attended the private Christian school Grand Canyon University and was set to graduate in a few weeks.
Kelsey, who was in town visiting her sister, attended Western Carolina University where she was studying microbiology, according to her social media accounts.
Both are alumnae of Collaborative College of Technology and Leadership and Mitchell Community College.
Allison was also a student at Grand Canyon University. Officials have not ruled whether he was was impaired at the time of the crash, the press release said.
