A 62-year-old man is dead after a minivan ran a stop sign and pulled into the path of his motorcycle Saturday in the area of U.S. 6 and U.S 421 according to police.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the intersection about 5:10 p.m. Saturday to learn Joseph Filippini, of Westville, was reportedly ejected from his motorcycle during the crash, according to a LaPorte County sheriff's news release. A preliminary investigation by LaPorte County sheriff's deputies shows Filippini was driving north on U.S. 421 when a westbound minivan, driven by Karina Hernandez, 35, of Merrillville, pulled into his path.
Two passenger children, ages 9 and 11, were transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening. A third child, age 15, was not injured.
Alcohol was not a factor, according to police. Hernandez was cited for disregarding a stop sign. The LaPorte County Sheriff's Office is investigating the crash.
