IONIA, MI : Driver at fault in accident on Monday, March 6th 2017
A second-grader at Jefferson Elementary School returned to school Monday, sore and scraped up but otherwise unhurt, after walking into a vehicle that drove through a crosswalk in front of him.
Robby Weber, 8, was crossing Lincoln Avenue at Jefferson Street around 3:40 p.m. with the assistance of a crossing guard, when the vehicle failed to yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk, according to John Odette, deputy director at the Ionia Department of Public Safety.
"It appears the driver was at fault," Odette said. "There was a crossing guard in the crosswalk performing their duties."
Robby's mom, Lisa, said her son and other children were in the crosswalk with the crossing guard, who was carrying a lighted sign. The rest of the traffic had stopped when the driver traveled through the crosswalk, she said. Robby hit the side of vehicle.
"The crossing guard said it made a loud thump, and he fell away. He was pushed away by the impact of the vehicle; thankfully he didn't go under," Lisa said. "It could have turned out a lot worse."
Lisa said Robby's teacher, Amy Seibold, was loading students on the Dial-a-Ride bus and came to Robby's side when she saw the accident occur. Robby's dad, Roger, took Robby to Sparrow Ionia Hospital, where he was examined and X-rayed. Matt Vogel, Jefferson principal, came to visit Robby at the hospital.
"No bones were broken. He has scrapes on his legs, but he didn't hit his head," said Lisa. "He's fine. He's just going to be sore for a while."
Lisa encouraged drivers to be vigilant when driving through a school zone.
"You really have to pay attention. There were other drivers there, and they all had stopped," she said. "The crossing guard wears a neon yellow coat and carries a flashing stop sign. It's hard to miss if you're paying attention."
"Thank goodness there weren't more severe injuries than a couple of bumps and scrapes on him," Odette said.
