North Carolina State Police say a fatal crash happened Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 158 in Harbinger.
The two-vehicle accident happened two miles north of the Wright Memorial Bridge. Emergency crews were called to the scene at 2:42 p.m.

According to police, a white Mercedes traveling southbound went off the road and into the right lane as a white SUV was traveling north. The driver of the Mercedes overcorrected and ended up turning around until the vehicle was facing northbound — the same side of the road as the SUV.

The SUV then hit the Mercedes’ driver door when the car came around directly into the its path.

The driver of the Mercedes was pronounced dead on scene. No one else was in the Mercedes.

The driver of the white SUV was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by helicopter. There were six passengers in the SUV. EMS crews took two of them to the hospital for minor injuries.

The other four passengers were taken by family and friends to the hospital to be evaluated.

Both directions of U.S. 158 were closed for about an hour from the time of the crash. The scene has since cleared.
