Gap, PA : Three people killed, two injured in Pennsylvania crash of pickup, tractor-trailer on Friday, September 19, 2014
A Pennsylvania highway collision between a tractor-trailer and a pickup truck Friday killed three people and injured two others, authorities said.
The crash occurred on state Route 340 at 8:20 a.m., when the westbound tractor-trailer struck a pickup on the driver's side as it entered the highway, state Trooper Ryan Lawrence told Lancaster Newspapers.
The two trucks slammed into an embankment and came to rest in a yard a few feet from a house, and at least one of the vehicles caught fire, witnesses told the newspaper. Two people inside the house were unhurt.
Three of the four occupants of the pickup were killed. Lawrence identified them as the driver, Jake Long, 19, of Honey Brook, and the two rear-seat passengers, Marcus Ruff, 26, of Downingtown, and Benuel Stoltzfus, 22, of Honey Brook, the newspaper said.
The front-seat passenger in the pickup, Jake Zook, 23, of Honey Brook, was injured but the injuries were not life-threatening. The tractor-trailer driver, Roberto Jones Chambers, 46, of Philadelphia had minor injuries, police said. Both men were taken to Lancaster General Hospital, Lawrence said.
Aaron Pittman, a mechanic at a used-car dealership across the street, said he ran to the wreckage to pull Zook through a window.
"I was just doing what needed to be done. There were people dying in there," Pittman, 28, told the newspaper, adding that he emptied two fire extinguishers onto the flames.
