Lansing, MI : Man dies in alcohol-related Allegan crash on Thursday, September 14, 2017
After taking off from an approaching police officer, a man died in a fatal crash on US-131 in Allegan County.
An Allegan County Sheriff’s Office deputy was patrolling around 10:25 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13 northbound on US-131 near 135th Avenue when the deputy saw a vehicle approaching him from behind. The vehicle was swerving all over the roadway, Capt. Chris Kuhn wrote in a press release.
The deputy tried to make a traffic stop with the vehicle. After continuing northbound on US-131, the vehicle eventually pulled over on the shoulder of the highway.
As the deputy approached the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle then drove away, continuing northbound. The deputy tried to catch up with the vehicle when the driver turned off the vehicle’s lights, Kuhn wrote. At that point, the vehicle lost control south of 142nd Avenue. It struck cable barriers and overturned several times in the southbound lanes of US-131.
Upon investigation, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name will be released pending family investigation. The sheriff’s office said the driver was not wearing his seat belt and alcohol was a factor.
The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Dorr Fire Department, Wayland EMS, Michigan State Police and the Wayland City Police Department.
