Portsmouth, VA : One person killed and one injured in tractor-trailer wreck on West Norfolk Bridge in Portsmouth on Wednesday morning, Aug 5, 2015

A man has died and another person was injured in a tractor trailer crash on the West Norfolk Bridge in Portsmouth Wednesday morning, an official said.

The accident happened just before 9 a.m. on the eastbound side of the bridge, which is on VA-164 near US-58, Portsmouth Police Department Det. Misty Holley said in a news release.

When officers and medics arrived, they found the man suffering from life-threatening injuries. He died at the scene, Holley said.

The driver of a second tractor trailer involved in the crash was taken to the hospital with injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening, Holley said.

A light pole was hit and fell into the water, and an overhead sign structure was also hit and damaged, Virginia Department of Transportation spokeswoman Laurie Simmons said in a separate release. The West Norfolk Bridge itself was not damaged, she said.

The eastbound side of the bridge is shut down to all traffic while police investigate the crash and the damage is repaired, the officials said. Motorists are advised to take an alternate route.
