Savannah, GA : One dead, pregnant woman injured in Effingham wreck on Tuesday, June 28, 2016

One Effingham County woman died and another, who was eight months pregnant, was injured in a wreck on Old River Road Tuesday, the State Patrol said.

Kristina Hawkins, 35, was traveling south in a Ford Taurus at 2:50 p.m. when she crossed the center line and struck head-on a northbound Honda Civic, according to Trooper J. Mock. She died.

The Civic was driven by 24-year-old Angela Boatright, he said. The pregnant woman was taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital because nearby thunderstorms prevented her from being taken by helicopter, he said.

The baby was delivered by Caesarean and the mother and child remained in the hospital, he said.

Mock said he was unsure what caused Hawkins to cross the center line, but she may have been using a cell phone.
