Police have issued a summons to a Parachute man accused of causing a wrong-way head-on collision on Interstate 70 in Grand Junction in June that injured a mother and daughter and ignited a wildfire that threatened homes.

Though the accident happened more than four months ago, officials were waiting for blood-test results to determine whether alcohol or drugs were involved in the accident before pursuing charges in the case, according to Grand Junction Police Department spokeswoman Heidi Davidson.

Police served James Bryant Moore, 48, with a summons charging him with felony vehicular assault and misdemeanor child abuse and reckless driving last week. Intoxication is not suspected to have contributed to the accident, Davidson said.

Moore, 48, was driving a Honda Accord the wrong direction on I-70 on the afternoon of June 20, according to accident reports. According to prior reports, several drivers tried to alert him and avoided colliding with him before he hit an SUV head-on west of the Horizon Drive exit, causing both vehicles to burst into flames.

A woman and her daughter are named as the primary victims of the accident in the summons. Samantha LeBaron and her daughter, Emery, of Hildale, Utah, were driving in the Ford Escape that was hit head-on. The 22-year-old LeBaron and her daughter were previously victims of a propane explosion that burned down their house three years ago in Cane Beds, Arizona, which left them with extensive burns and required part of LeBaron’s leg to be amputated.

That prosthetic is what bystanders were able to disconnect to remove LeBaron from her crushed car that day, according to prior reports.

The fires ignited by the accident spread to tinder-dry vegetation on the south side of the interstate, burning fences and threatening homes.

It’s not clear exactly why Moore was driving the wrong way on the roadway at this point.

“Right now it’s suspected that it was due to a medical issue,” Davidson said.

Moore was served with the summons at Mantey Heights Rehabilitation & Care Center, according to police records. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
