PORTLAND, OR : Officials urge drivers to be safe after string of deadly crashes on July, Tuesday 4th 2017

Law enforcement officials are urging drivers to be safe on the roads this Fourth of July after six people were killed in six local crashes over a 24-hour period.

The deadly crashes took place Monday afternoon, evening and into Tuesday morning.

One person was killed in a crash involving a passenger car, an SUV and a pickup truck in McMinnville along Highway 99W. Two others, including a young boy, were taken to the hospital by helicopter.

Police said a 14-year-old girl was hit and killed by a car in Salem as she was attempting to cross Commercial Street near Royvonne Avenue Southeast just before 6 p.m. The driver is cooperating with the investigation.

A driver died after crashing into an unoccupied parked car in the 2000 block of Southeast 96th Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Police said the driver was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

About an hour and 30 minutes later, another person was killed after a car struck a tree along Northeast Airport Way in Portland. The car was reportedly on fire and bystanders pulled the passenger out and attempted CPR. They were unsuccessful.

A pedestrian died after being hit by a car along Southeast 122nd Avenue and Woodward Place just before 10:30 p.m. Officers said the 23-year-old man was exhibiting strange behavior and ran into the road, where he was hit by an intoxicated driver. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. He was later arrested on DUII charges.

Seaside police and Oregon State Police closed Highway 101 near milepost 19 due around 3 a.m. Tuesday to a deadly crash.

In light of these deadly crashes, police would like to remind drivers to travel safely during the holiday.
