Starr, SC: Two dead in Anderson County head-on collision on Saturday 27 2016.
The Anderson County Coroner was called to the scene of a crash in Anderson County Saturday.
The accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on Smith McGee Road at Devonshire Road in Starr.
Officials say a Chrysler car was heading south as a Chevrolet SUV was traveling north along Smith McGee Road when the SUV crossed over the center line and struck the Chrysler head-on.
Roadways were blocked as officials investigated the incident.
Reports say the driver of the Chrysler, 32-year-old Erika Nicole Tench from Starr, had to be extracted from the vehicle after becoming trapped inside. She succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Tench was not wearing a seat belt during the incident.
The driver of the SUV, 49-year-old Jimmy Lee Bell from Anderson, also became entrapped in the vehicle and had to be extracted and was transported by EMS to AnMed Health Medical Center. He later died from injuries sustained in the crash. His two 16-year-old sons were sleeping in the vehicle when the crash occurred. Both were wearing seat belts during the incident and suffered no injuries.
Coroner Greg Shore said Tench was on her way home and was struck about two miles from her parents' house.
He said it appears Bell's sleep apnea condition may have been the cause of the accident because no skid marks were present near either vehicle.
The coroner is conducting further examination on both bodies on Sunday.
