Daytona Beach,FL : Daytona felon arrested in hit-and-run of police car on December, Wednesday 27th 2017

A felon who police said struck a Daytona Beach patrol car and then ran away was arrested after drugs were found in his vehicle.

John Headen IV, 23, of Daytona Beach, was found by police after the hit-and-run crash hiding in a trash can. He is charged with resisting an officer without violence and several counts of drug possession after the car he was driving in hit an officer’s patrol vehicle at the intersection of McLeod Avenue and Walnut Street on Wednesday night.

The officer in the cruiser, Michael Lima, suffered only minor scrapes and bruises to his arms from the crash, police said.

According to a police report, Headen was driving a white Kia Optima when he went through a stop sign as he made a wide west turn on McLeod, causing his car to collide into the front end of Lima’s cruiser, which was heading east. After striking the vehicle, three men ran from the car, authorities said.

A police K-9 began to search the area in the 300 block of Walnut, and the dog helped police track down Headen who was hiding in a green trash can, according to a charging affidavit.

Meanwhile, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper was called in to investigate the hit-and-run crash, and a search of the Kia turned up several plastic baggies, which were found to be holding 6 grams of cocaine, 1 gram of heroin and several hydromorphone pills, an opioid painkiller.

Headen was arrested and then taken to a nearby hospital, where he admitted there were two other people in the car but refused to speak further with investigators. After being treated for injuries to his head and lower leg, Headen was transported to the Volusia County Branch Jail where he remained held without bail Thursday.

The FHP charged Headen with one count of felony cocaine possession and two counts of felony drug possession, as well as one misdemeanor for leaving the scene of a crash. He was also charged with violating his probation on fleeing and eluding charges. Daytona Beach police charged him with resisting an officer without violence.
