Sacramento, CA : Man injured in fiery crash in I-5 on Sunday, August 20, 2017
A big rig crashed on Interstate 5 in Redding on Sunday night, after it went off the road, smashed into a tree and burst into flames.
The driver, identified as Jeffrey Smith, 57, of Shingletown, suffered severe burns to his face. Smith suffered severe burns to his face, arms, hands, torso and lower legs in the crash, but was able to get out of the truck before it became engulfed in flames, the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP said passersby stopped and assisted Smith away from the fire. He was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for treatment before being flown to the U.C. Davis Burn Center in Sacramento.
An employee at the burn center did not have a condition on Smith and said to call back on Tuesday.
