Rogersville,AL : A Rogersville woman died after a wreck on July, Thursday 13th 2017
A Rogersville woman died after a wreck Thursday morning on U.S. 72 in Athens, officials said.
Dawn Whitt Trousdale, 45, died at Huntsville Hospital shortly after the crash, Athens Police Chief Floyd Johnson said.
Trousdale was traveling east on U.S. 72 in a Jeep Wrangler and stopped at a traffic light where the highway meets Lucas Ferry Road. Witnesses said a tractor-trailer, also driving east on U.S. 72, struck the back of the Jeep, causing the back of the vehicle to ignite, he said in the release.
When police and first-responders arrived, they found several people trying to pull Trousdale from the burning vehicle and extinguish the fire, according to the release.
Athens Fire and Rescue was able to put out the fire quickly and removed Trousdale from the Jeep, police said.
Responders with the Athens-Limestone Ambulance Service treated Trousdale until she was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital, where she later died, police said.
Athens police and state troopers are investigating the wreck, police said.
"I do anticipate this case being sent to the district attorney's office with a recommendation it be presented to a future grand jury," Johnson said.
Johnson could not say if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
