A 19-year-old Campbell man suspected of a DUI crash that killed a bicyclist on Sunday afternoon has been identified by the California Highway Patrol as Damion Joseph Sandoval-Pacheco.
Sandoval-Pacheco was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter, according to CHP Officer Ross Lee. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office will make the final determination on charges in connection with the fatality.
As of late Monday afternoon, the name of the bicyclist, a 32-year-old San Jose man, had not been released by the Santa Clara County coroner's office.
Sandoval-Pacheco was speeding northbound on San Tomas Expressway at about 4:12 p.m. when he lost control of a 1997 Ford Mustang, veered to the right and struck the bicyclist, who was riding on the right shoulder, according to the CHP.
The car then spun out of control, struck the center median and came to rest in the right two lanes near Winchester Boulevard.
The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.
