A bicyclist was pronounced dead on the scene of a car accident in east Charlotte, according to Medic. Two other patients were taken from the scene of the crash with injuries.
The crash happened around 11:30 a.m. Sunday near the intersection of Hawthorne Lane and Parkwood Avenue.
When officers arrived on scene, they say they found two vehicles and a bicyclist involved in the crash.
According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, Nathaniel Manson Lancaster was driving a pick-up truck westbound on Parkwood Avenue when he tried to turn left onto Hawthorne Lane on a flashing yellow light. He reportedly turned into the path of a car and hit the car, causing it to spin out of control and hit the bicyclist from behind.
Police say the 73-year-old on the bike was traveling eastbound on Parkwood Avenue. He was reportedly not wearing a helmet.
The driver and passenger in the car were taken to Carolinas Medical Center with minor injuries, according to police.
CMPD says alcohol impairment and speed were not contributing circumstances in the crash.
Lancaster has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to yield at an intersection. He was taken into custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's office.
Officials have not said what led up to the crash.
