Gainesville tennis coach Craig Oransky died in a car crash early Saturday morning when police say he was speeding, ran off the road and hit several trees.
Oransky, 26, was pulled from the car by Gainesville Police Officer Shelley Postle and several bystanders before the vehicle's passenger compartment caught fire, GPD reported.
The accident occurred at about 12:36 a.m. at the intersection of Northwest 34th Street and 39th Avenue. GPD reported that Oransky was northbound at a high speed and ran off the road at the northeast corner of the intersection. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was the only person in the car, according to GPD.
An investigation into the accident is continuing.
Oransky was the son of longtime Gainesville tennis pro Mike Oransky and the late Joyce Oransky, who was also a tennis pro and an All-American on the University of Florida tennis team.
The senior Oransky runs the Gainesville Tennis Academy at Westside Park, where Craig Oransky was a coach.
Pro shop manager Roy Davis, who was at the courts Saturday, said Oransky had a big heart and played tennis all his life.
"I liked Craig a lot. He was a good kid, a very smart kid. He was a nice kid," Davis said. "Craig probably had a racket in his hand when he was born and was actually a very good player. He taught tennis — clinics, private lessons, kids, adults."
