Topeka, KS : Two killed in crash near Coffeyville on Sunday, 8th April 2018
Two people were killed in a head-on collision Sunday, including a firefighter with the Coffeyville Fire Department.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol’s crash log, Derek S. Messner, 44, of Coffeyville, was driving eastbound on U-166 in when he went left of center for an unknown reason. He struck Garry G. Bush, Jr., 57, of Caney. The crash occurred about three miles west of Coffeyville in Montgomery County.
Messner and Bush were declared dead at the scene.
Jana G. Bush, 55, of Caney, an occupant in Garry Bush’s vehicle was transported to a Joplin hospital with injuries, KHP said.
In a Facebook post on Monday, the City of Coffeyville said that Messner was a lieutenant in the fire department. Crews with the department had been dispatched to the wreck.
“This is hitting our department hard,” said fire chief Bob Roesky. “We train for traffic incidents but no training prepares you to respond to a wreck for one of your own.”
Messner had been employed with the city for 15 years, according to the post.
