One person was critically injured Tuesday night after a semi-trailer hauling popcorn and a passenger car collided along U.S. 421 near the Michigan City Campground, LaPorte County Sheriff’s Captain Mike Kellems said Tuesday night.
All north and southbound lanes between County Road 100 North and County Road 200 North were shut down shortly after the 6:50 p.m. crash due to a fuel spill, Kellems said.
A hazmat team is on scene, he said.
The driver of the passenger vehicle, who was extricated from the vehicle by Cool Spring Township fire officials, was scheduled to be airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Kellems said.
The semi driver refused medical treatment on scene, Kellems said.
