West Wheatfield Township, PA : Two men killed in fiery crash on Route 22 in Indiana County on Sunday night, February 28, 2016

Two men died when one rear-ended the vehicle of another before crashing head-on into a tractor-trailer Sunday night on Route 22 in Indiana County.

The coroner said Matthew Hess, 30, of Girard, and Richard Lowers Jr., 56, of New Florence, died at the accident scene near the Clay Pike Road intersection in West Wheatfield Township.

Both men were driving east when Hess' SUV rear-ended Lowers' car as he was turning off the highway shortly before 9 p.m., state police said.

The impact sent Hess' vehicle into the westbound lanes, where his SUV collided with the oncoming truck, and both vehicles caught fire, police said.

Lowers' car went off the road, caught fire and came to rest against an embankment, police said.

The tractor-trailer driver, a St. Louis man, was taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center and was expected to survive.
