HANOVER COUNTY, VA : 1 dead after multi-vehicle crash on I-95 south in Hanover County on Tuesday, 12th February 2019

One person was killed in a four-vehicle crash on I-95 South in Hanover County Tuesday morning.

The crash happened just after 5:45 a.m., near the Altee Elmont and Sliding Hill exit (mile marker 86).

For about three hours, all southbound lanes were closed and traffic was being detoured onto exit 86B. Lanes reopened shortly before 9 a.m.

According to Virginia State Police, a 2003 Ford Mustang, being driven by 29-year-old Brendon Cook of King George County, was traveling southbound on I-95 when he struck a 2014 Honda Accord in the rear. The mustang then hit a guard rail, forcing it back into the center lane where it was struck by a 1994 Ford Ranger that was also traveling southbound.

A 2016 Volvo tractor-trailer that was also heading southbound struck the Mustang and the Ranger, forcing the Volvo tractor into the jersey wall.

The drivers of all four vehicles were wearing their seat belts, according to VSP, but Cook succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The male driver of the Ford Ranger, who police estimated to be in his 20s and is from the Fredericksburg area, was taken to VCU Medical Center with serious injuries.

Speed and wet roadway conditions are being considered a factor in the cause of the crash, which remains under investigation.
