Anniston, AL : Jacksonville police officer involved in two-vehicle wreck on Saturday night, November 26, 2016
A Saturday night wreck was under investigation by state troopers Sunday after a Jacksonville police cruiser and another vehicle collided at the intersection of Mountain Street and Pelham Road North, officials said.
Jacksonville Assistant Chief Bill Wineman said by phone Sunday that neither the officer nor the other driver were injured in the wreck, which occurred near the end of second shift at 11 p.m. Wineman said he was unable to identify the other driver.
“My concern however was making sure everyone was OK first,” he said. “There was some argument about who ran the red light.”
Wineman said state troopers were investigating the wreck; efforts to reach a spokesman for that agency were unsuccessful Sunday afternoon.
There may be body camera footage of the wreck if the officer turned it on immediately after the crash happened, Wineman said.
“If he was wearing the head mount, he should have looked up to check the light before going under it,” the assistant chief said. “If he was wearing a shoulder mount it might be harder to tell, and that’s assuming he turned it on after getting out the car.”
The body cameras that Jacksonville police officers wear, Wineman said, are always watching and when they are turned on they archive the previous 30 seconds. However, there will not be any vehicle footage because Jacksonville police officers don’t have dash cameras, Wineman said.
